Harrison changes the face of pub hotel hospitality for Young’s in Clapham
How the right design strategy helped The Windmill pub make the most of its retail space and central London location
The Windmill pub and restaurant in Clapham, London, was actually trading well when Young’s came to us with a challenge. They recognised that the property had far more potential than was being realised, and they wanted us to help them unlock it.
The solution was to evolve The Windmill into a destination landmark pub with stunning boutique-style guest rooms, each individually designed. Not only would this approach breathe new popularity into the existing 29 ‘tired’ bedrooms under the pub’s roof, but it would also reposition any poorly-utilised space throughout the rest of the building.
Whilst the pub continued to trade, we spearheaded the refurbishment of the original property on a multi-level floor plan, as well as the design and build of an additional 13 rooms, including the conversion of staff quarters.
It was important to Young’s and ourselves that each bedroom was furnished with high quality basic amenities and given a highly individual look and feel – a real home from home. Floors are a mixture of carpet and timber, woven natural fabrics are mixed with soft wallpaper and earthy paint finishes, and all bathrooms are both practical and luxurious.
While the pub and restaurant business at The Windmill continues to succeed, it is now hugely complemented by the hotel business, which has beaten original estimates for occupancy rates and sales. The Windmill now has a uniquely warm style which flows seamlessly throughout the whole building and, most importantly, it is fulfilling its potential for our client.
Young & Co’s Retail Director Patrick Dardis enthused:
“Harrison carried out this complex design project with practicality, empathy and creativity. The Windmill is eclectically stunning, full of character and a whole world away from a bland hotel chain scheme. We no longer have just a pub with rooms, we have a complete overnight experience.”
Harrison continues to work with Young’s on further hotel developments within their estate.
